It’s time for our annual spring overview of what’s new on the market. Most manufacturers have at least a few new pink cameras in their lineup, but there is really nothing new and totally groundbreaking out there. Just updates and tweaks of last year’s models.

The one thing we’ve seen is that more and more cameras come with a 5x optical zoom, which is nice, you can never have too much zoom capability as far as we’re concerned. (The focal lenghts posted are the 35mm equivalents).

The only out of the ordinary product this spring is Sony’s bloggie (listed in part 2 of this mini-series), a camera/HD video camera with a 270 degree swivel lens, built-in USB arm and software that makes it super easy to upload your images and movies to your blog, YouTube, Shutterfly, Photobucket, etc.

It comes in two models – the CM5 and the PM5 – but only the PM5 has the swivel lens, and it’s the only model offered in pink. On the downside, the PM5 has no optical zoom, and photos are only 5MP. Having said that, it is a Sony product, so the design is flawless – super stylish – and I am sure there is a market for it.

Now, to the list of new cameras:

Canon

No new cameras in pink.

Casio

There’s only one new pink camera from Casio, the EX-Z90. A nice camera with a special feature called “Dynamic Photo”; a function which lets you add animated graphics (there are 8 built in) to still photos right in the camera. As in previous versions, you can also put a moving subject on a new background.

EXILIM Zoom EX-Z90
12.1 megapixles, 3x optical zoom, 35-105mm, 2.7″ display, 35.7MB internal memory, SD & SDHC compatible, dynamic photo. Color: Hot pink. Power: Rechargeable NP-60 Li-ion battery. Weight: 3.6 oz. Size: 3.53 x 2.0 x 0.76″. MSRP: $149

Fuji

No new cameras in pink.

GE’s lineup of pink cameras are all a vivid fuchsia and come with pretty standard features. The one that stands out from the rest is the touch panel E1250TW (beacuase of its touch panel).

To me, the most fun kind of photography is the experimental kind, when you just play around, let your creativity flow, and allow yourself to get totally wrapped up in the joy of shooting. The results are varied of course – sometimes they’re totally disappointing, but other times, you get a photo that totally wows you and inspires you to push yourself even further. And don’t feel like “that kind of photography can only be done with an SLR” – you can get great, unique shots with point-and-shoots too. Here are a few techniques and ideas to help jumpstart your creativity.

Flowy, Dreamy Water
A tripod and a slow shutter speed is all you need to create those images you see on posters and cards everywhere. Put your camera on a tripod, set your shutter speed to 1/30 or slower, and shoot. If there is no shutter control on your camera, try setting it on “night” mode.

Intentional Blur & Movement
Sometimes photos that show movement are much more interesting than when everything is still and in focus. Try this: just as in the water shots above, put your camera on a tripod, set a slow shutter speed (1/30 or slower, or “night” mode) and take a picture of one (or more) stationary object and one (or more) moving. A few ideas are a house lit up at night with people moving around inside, your dog playing on the beach, a Ferris wheel with a friend standing still in front of it, a tree with clouds on a really windy day.

Different Angles & Perspectives
When I was in photography school, one of the most creatively useful classes (to me) was one where we had to shoot one roll looking down and one looking up. It was a great exercise in expanding one’s horizons a little bit. We tend to look down, but not up as much as we should. Try it – you might find design details on buildings you walk by every day that you’ve never noticed before, or interesting patterns on the ground. Also try getting down on the ground yourself for a “miniature dachshund view” of the world.

Use Portrait Setting For Other Shots As Well
The portrait mode uses a wider aperture in order to get your subject sharp and the background out of focus. But don’t limit yourself to using this setting only when shooting people. Try it with anything where you want the same effect – a cup of steaming coffee, a bouquet of flowers, a detail on a ship. Note: this only works when your subject is closer to you than the background, so make sure there is some distance between the two.

Silhouettes
On a bright and sunny day (or at sunset), find a large flower or weed or tree you like the outlines of, get down low on the ground and point your camera upwards. Make sure it measures the light of the sky, not the flower or whatever you’re shooting (you want that to be underexposed and just show up as an outline or silhouette), and take your picture. The result should be a silhouette of the subject.

If you take it at sunset, position yourself so that the flower/weed/tree is between your camera and the sun (careful with your eyes, don’t look into the sun!), make sure your camera exposes for the sky, and shoot. These shots look great as wall art when blown up big and framed. Try it with other subjects as well – your dog, best friend, a statue, or a skyline are a few ideas.

Color or Subject Theme
Take a bunch of shots of items of a particular color or subject – green, reflections, hands/paws, or letters for example. Make sure to include all kinds of shots: close-ups, landscapes, details, movement, sharp focus, etc. Then print up 9 of these shots as square prints and display them together on a wall – great, free art that you created yourself!

Explore An Object
Use the technique above to explore all angels of an object and display the photos the same way.

Collect Photos Of A Certain Object
Start your own photo collection and try to get at least one photo of the particular object every time you travel somewhere, whether it’s local or international. Some ideas are: buildings by a certain architect, portraits of dogs of a specific breed, bread, license plates, signs (could be from a particular kind of store, like shoe store, or flower shop, or perhaps parking signs or street names), a slice of pizza, just let your creativity run wild. These are memories you will have forever, and they are a lot easier to pack than a vase or crystal bowl.

No sooner had I published my Pink Digital Cameras – New Spring 2009 post than Canon announced the release of three new pink cameras and one new pink photo printer this spring (all are scheduled to reach stores in March). They are all nice, high quality cameras, with a few fun little extras. The portable photo printer “SELPHY CP780″ is available in 3 colors (silver, blue and pink), prints 4×6 photos and lets you choose from five color effects.

Here are the details:

PowerShot SD960 IS Digital ELPH
This softly rounded, pale pink model has 12.1 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, a focal length of 28-112mm (35mm film equivalent), 2.8″ screen, 18 shooting modes, optical image stabilizer, face detection and face detection self timer, HD video. Weight: 5.11 oz. Size: 3.85×2.12×0.87″. MSRP: $329.99.
Special feature: Active display technology – switch between images during playback by shaking the camera (sort of like the shuffle on an iPod Nano).

PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH
The fuchsia SD1200 has the classic compact Canon camera shape, and features 10.0 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, 35-105mm focal length, 2.5″ screen, 18 shooting modes, optical image stabilizer, face detection and face detection self timer. Weight: 4.23 oz. Size: 3.48×2.16×0.86″. MSRP: $229.99.

PowerShot A1100 IS
The almost purplish pink A1100 is replacing the A1000 and has the same body shape, but upgraded features: 12.1 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, 35-140mm focal length, 2.5″ screen, 18 shooting modes, optical image stabilizer, face detection and face detection self timer. Weight: 5.47 oz. Size: 3.76×2.46×1.22″. MSRP: $199.99.
Special features: Accepts AA batteries (alkaline and NiMH). Has print/share button, ID Photo Print, and Movie Print.

SELPHY CP780
The latest among the portable Canon printers, the small (6.9×3.0×5.2″) and lightweight (2.1 lbs) SELPHY CP780 is both cute and functional. Compatible with Windows and MAC, it produces borderless 4×6 prints (in around 47 sec.) with a resolution of 300×300 dpi. Just hook your camera up (or insert the memory card in the slot on the printer), and print. You can choose from five different color effects – black&white, sepia, vivid, neutral, and positive film – and the printer adjusts red eyes and corrects the brightness and contrast of faces in a photo automatically. There is a 2.5″ screen on top of the printer, so you have a chance to preview the results before hitting the print button. MSRP: $99.00.

Casio, Fuji, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung all have new pink camera releases scheduled for this spring, and we have put together a short overview of each:

Casio

Casio announced that they are releasing four new models: the EX-Z270, the EX-Z400, the EX-S5 and the EX-S12 in March 2009.

One exciting new feature is the “Dynamic Photo” function (in the Z270, Z400 and S12), which makes it possible to cut out the subject in a photo and put it in another photo for a different background, or create a collage using parts of several different photos right in the camera. Other improvements include the new Engine 4.0, with better colors, less noise, auto-tracking of moving subjects, and less energy consumption (=longer battery life). The Z400 and Z270 also have a “makeup” function which smoothes the skin and soften the shadows on people’s faces. Specs in short:

EXILIM Zoom EX-Z270
10.1 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, 28-112mm focal length, 2.7″ display, 37 best shot modes, anti-shake, face detection, HD movie recording, YouTube mode. Weight: 3.9 oz. Size: 3.9×2.2×0.8”. MSRP $229.99

EXILIM Zoom EX-Z400
12.1 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, 28-112mm focal length, 3″ display, 39 best shot modes, anti-shake, face detection, HD movie recording, YouTube mode. Weight: 4.6 oz. Size: 3.8×2.3×0.9”. MSRP $299.99

EXILIM Card EX-S12
12.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, 2.7″ display, 41 best shot modes, anti-shake, face detection, HD movie recording, YouTube mode. Weight: 3.9 oz. Size: 3.7×2.2×0.6”. MSRP $249.99

EXILIM Card EX-S5
10.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, 2.7″ display, 23 best shot modes, face detection, HD movie recording, YouTube mode. Weight: 3.5 oz. Size: 3.8×2.2×0.7”. MSRP $179.99.

These days, you can find electronics in all colors of the rainbow and more. Just look at laptops, iPods, cell phones, Blackberries – the choices are endless. The same goes for digital cameras, at least when it comes to the point-and-shoot variety. We have yet to see SLRs in colors other than black and silver (notable exceptions are Pentax’s white K2000, and Panasonic’s blue Lumix DMC-G1A and red DMC-G1R), but I wouldn’t be surprised if that started changing soon, too.

For those looking for a pink camera, there are plenty to choose from. We have put together a list of the pink digital point and shoot cameras currently on the market (not including kids’ cameras and non-reputable brands). To see which ones stand out when it comes to several important features, check out our Pink Digital Camera Reviews post. Also keep an eye out for our upcoming post about the new camera releases this spring.

So you got that great, gorgeous pink camera, and it’s all you expected and more. But how about accessorizing it with some fun peripherals? Here are some of our favorites (for bags and cases, check out our Camera Bags And Cases post.

Canon SELPHY CP760 Photo Printer
This great little printer (in “Pink Melody”) is Windows and Mac compatible, accepts a myriad of memory cards, and produces water-resistant, brilliant prints up to 4×8″. Its small size (7.9″ W x 3.3″ H x 5.6″ D) and weight (only 2.1 lbs) make it a perfect choice for those who like to print on the go (while traveling, at a friends house, etc.).

Gorillapod
The Gorillapod is a fabulous invention! These light, totally flexible and inexpensive tripods are not only easy to carry along everywhere, their bendable legs can also be attached to just about everything (a car mirror, tree branch, your bike, you name it). They come in several sizes to fit everything from cell phones to heavy professional SLRs and camcorders. The “original” size (for point-and-shoot cameras up to 11.5 oz) now also comes in different colors, pink being one of them. Since they’re so small and light, you can carry one with you wherever you go. You never know when you’ll need it: for fireworks, doing still lifes indoors, or to give moving water that dreamy, flowy effect (use a very slow shutter speed).

Transcend M5 Card Reader
Hot pink, tiny and inexpensive, the Transcend M5 card reader is a great choice, especially if you have a bunch of different electronics you want to download photos, music, or videos from. It is compatible with almost every memory card available and transfers are fast thanks to the high-speed USB 2.0 interface.

Memory Card Case
It is surprisingly difficult to find a pink memory card case (are you listening, manufacturers?), but after doing a lot of research, we did find a couple. The first one comes from Capdase (based in Hong Kong) and is a soft, stylish salmon pink pouch/wallet-like thing, which holds a variety of cards and sells for around $6. The second one, a hard plastic case with a hot pink interior, is made by Hakuba and holds 4 or 8 memory stick cards.

There are just too many cute camera cases out there to choose only one. Luckily, it’s one of the most affordable accessories for you camera. Below are some of our favorites:

We love Kodak’s “Fashion Camera” clutch in creamy pink leather with a brown/pink interior. It comes with both a shoulder and a wrist strap and has separate slots for memory cards on the inside. It’s so adorable that it could easily double as a small evening bag.

For more of a surfer theme, our number one choice is the padded Dillon Beach in “pink Hawaiian Floral”. It comes with an adjustable strap, so you can wear it across the body, on the shoulder or around the waist.

Sony has a lot of adorable pink camera cases, but our favorite is the soft leather LCS-TWB/P. Designed for their W and T series Cyber-shot cameras (of which many come in pink), this classic pink case with a thin white ribbon and chrome ring comes with a detachable wrist strap and is small, chic and very fashionable. It also comes in black, green and dark gray.

Canon’s stylish PSC-1000 (for their SD1000 cameras) in grainy, dark fuchsia leather looks more like a designer wallet than a camera case. It has a magnetic snap closure, and an opening up top for your camera’s wrist strap.

The Tamrac 3583 case in dark coral suede also has a wallet-like look to it, and is soft as can be. This tiny case, is padded, comes with a belt loop and removable shoulder strap and has elastic sides, so you can fit a variety of (ultra-thin) cameras in it.

New York-based fashion designer Dory’s padded gadget bags for digital cameras, iPods, cell phones, etc. are so adorable you’ll want more than one. We especially like the pink case with a brown sort of vintage damask wallpaper pattern (she also makes a laptop sleeve in the same fabric), and the brown one with pink and white daisies. All her gadget bags have zipper closures and a swivel hook.
